Manitoba Motocross Opener: Melita's Sandy Oaks Raceway

at May 6, 2007 9:56pm

Report and photos by Doug Engstrom

While some racers shy away from the deep whooped out sand of Melita’s Sandy Oaks Raceway, 400+ moto junkies made the trek to Melita this year to get their first fix of the 2007 Manitoba Motocross Season.

Vet class eligible, Earl Reimer showed up at Sandy Oaks with a new Headingley Sport Shop KX250F.  Reimer’s focus on this day was the 125 Pro class where he put down a dominant 1-1 day to take the overall.  Morden Motorsports Josh Penner’s 4-2 finishes helped him grab second overall ahead of the impressive ride of the Brandon RV & Leisure Suzuki of Brady Breemersch, who was running his first ever Pro event.

After suffering the theft of her RM125 several weeks ago, Bev Bryce-Leger had reason to smile after piloting her new RM-Z250 to the top of the box in the Ladies Class.  Dominique Morin posted a 3-3 day to grab second ahead of Carmen Regier.

Jeremy Breemersch (49) triple classed at Melita taking the overalls in 125 Junior and 85cc 12-16, while finishing second in the Supermini class behind Garrett Graboweski.

In one of the most closely contested classes of the day, Paul Masse took top honours in the Vet Junior class with 3-2 moto scores. The 2-3 day of Ian Blair and 1-6 finishes of Greg Wiebe rounded out the podium.

Tyler Groening took his first ever overall in style going 1-1 in the 50cc 4-6 class.

A victory in the second moto allowed Jamie Wilson to grab the overall in the 250 Intermediate class.  Wilson’s 3-1 day bettered the 1-3 outing of Luke McFadden and the 2-5 finishes of Devon Ward.

Kraig Bergson took top spot in the 250 Junior class.

Ty Shemko grabbed the 65cc class overall ahead of the hard charging pair of Hayden McKinny and Jordan Devloo.  Shemko also nabbed a top 5 in 85cc 7-11 racing in his first appearance in the class.

FXR MX’s Matt Hamm dominated the 25+ class. Hamm was joined on the box by Chris Elliot and Scott Unrau.

Dyllan Lischynski (77) leads Pearce McKellar in a GP Junior battle that likely featured the fastest corner speeds in any Junior class on the day.  Lischynski took the overall with 3-2 finishes while Mckellar and Lindsay Masse traded moto wins.

After missing much of 2006 due to injury, Troy Revet (63) returned to the 125 Intermediate class with a bang.  Revet threw down a pair of moto wins to take the top spot ahead of the 2-2 day of Kyle Cyr.

Lane Louttit put home track advantage to good use, taking the overall in the 85cc 7-11 class.  Louttit was joined on the podium by Rio Stoesz and Derek Donald.

Westside Honda’s Eddie Anderson was top dog in the Youth class with 1-1 finishes.

2006 WCAN 50cc champ Cole Dekoninck picked up right where he left off last season with another 1-1 day.  Dekoninck was joined on the podium by Darrian White and Nathan Wright.

Dawson Lawrence made the best of his second moto victory in 65cc B class action.  Lawrence’s 2-1 topped the 1-2 finishes of Josh Bell.

After contesting both Pro classes for the past several seasons, Winnipeg Sport & Leisure’s Mike Harms showed up at Melita with only a CRF450R in the trailer.  One bike wasn’t a problem however as he put the Harms Racing tuned CRF450R to good use taking the overalls in the 250 Pro and Vet Master classes.

Brendan Mahoney (115) goes for a Youth B class holeshot.  Mahoney used his good start to take the second step on the box behind Brenden Mitchell and ahead of Ian Smith.

See you at the races...
